CASSANDRA NG
Cassandra Ng’s bold geometric paintings emerge from her fascination with synaesthesia, the neurological phenomenon through which senses cross and music can be experienced as visions of colour.
With music and lyrics as her starting point, Cassandra allows natural colour associations to surface as she paints and listens to the music. Preferencing warm hues and employing the skilful application of gold leaf onto linen, her paintings explore and communicate themes of love, joy, loss, growth and fun. The morse code that translates lyrics into a visual language populates Cassandra’s work with dynamic, graphic patterns.
In some instances, colours clash or a single hue dominates – listening to an upbeat pop song could result in an unexpected burst of fluoro, whereas a painting inspired by grief might feature moody shades of blue. In each case, Cassandra’s primary goal is to convey raw emotion and encourage the viewer to momentarily pause, tap into a feeling and make a meaningful connection.
Born and based in Sydney, Cassandra attended COFA UNSW (College of Fine Arts, now UNSW Art + Design) and completed a Masters of Fine Arts, following on from a Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery from Monash University. She now runs her art and medical careers side-by-side to strike an inspired balance.
Cassandra’s work is held in numerous private collections and she is currently represented by Sydney Road Gallery, in Balgowlah, and Art to Art, in Melbourne. She also participates in annual events, including the Affordable Art Fair and the Other Art Fair. She takes on a limited number of commissions each year.
